Idaho's First Certified Net Zero Dream Home

The St. Jude Dream Home® Giveaway is a community service project sponsored by
Flynner Homes, Idaho Power, Northwest ENERGY STAR®, KTVB, and Peak
Broadcasting to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

During the Summer of 2010, a new ENERGY STAR & NAHB Green certified, Net Zero home will be raffled at the Willowgreens – a sustainable, 100% ENERGY STAR community in Boise, ID. The Net Zero home, built by Flynner Homes with support from the Department of Energy’s Building America program, is designed to show how smart building choices can result in a home that minimizes energy use while maximizing comfort and style.

The net zero home will feature advanced building techniques and products including:
• 14 inch thick exterior wall systems
• Triple-pane windows; <0.2 U-factor
• R-77 insulation in ceiling and R-58 in exterior walls
• HVAC system – Daikin air to air heat pump 4-port mini-split
• Solar water heating system
• Heat recovery ventilator (HRV)
• R-28 insulated slab on grade and R-13 insulated foundation system
• 8 KW/hr photovoltaic system (solar panels)

Located in Willowgreens, a sustainable 100% Energy Star community in Boise on the Boise River Greenbelt. The community is just a minutes walk to the Willow Lane Sports Complex and Park. There are several miles of Greenbelt out the back door with the Boise River within a hundred yards. Willowgreens is located within a mile of the Veterans Memorial Parkway, so access to the freeway is a snap.

Doesn’t the floor have R-40 or so?

Thanks for the question, Marc. I spoke with the builder, Scott Flynn, who stated that there are 4 layers of 2″ rigid foam underneath, which provide an insulation value of R-28.

The tile was installed by Chris Woods at Majestic Flooring and Design. The tiles were from Sandhill industries.
